Later one, after serial number 9,xxx,xxx (1965) will have a spike. Serial number on military gun and imported ones can be read as this, the serial number is only the last 6 digits and usually will only go up to X,399,999. The "X" digit is the year of mfg. I.E.. Gas piston wear. As with any used gun, bring a cleaning rod or boresnake when shopping. A fresh slime of oil hides some bad sins in that barrel. Russians are great SKS rifles, but just as good yugoslavian SKS go for much less.
